This is the one place in Austin where the legal leash length changes mid walk. Eight feet is allowed in West Lake Hills, six on City of Austin land, and the greenbelt at the bottom of the hill is City of Austin regardless of where you started. Most Westlake owners use all eight feet, which teaches the dog that the end of the line is where the interesting things are, and then the shorter limit becomes an argument. • Constant deer movement through yards, which builds a chase habit fast
• Households with frequent guests, staff and contractors, so dogs need to be reliable around strangers arriving all day

The 78746 boundary itself

Lake Austin to the north, just east of MoPac to the east, Barton Creek to the south, and out along Bee Cave Road to the west. Roughly three miles west of downtown, all Eanes ISD.

Rollingwood Park ball fields 3, 4 and 5

The only legal off leash ground inside Westlake, and only when no game is scheduled. Worth knowing if you are trying to test a recall without driving to Zilker.

Barton Creek Greenbelt, southern edge

The southern boundary of the area and City of Austin parkland, leash required, heavily used by off leash dogs whose owners ignore that.

Who makes the rules in Westlake

It depends where in Westlake you are. The 78746 area contains the City of West Lake Hills and the City of Rollingwood, each with its own police department and its own animal ordinance, plus large areas that are simply City of Austin, plus pockets of unincorporated Travis County. One zip code, one school district, four enforcing agencies.

West Lake Hills allows a leash up to 8 feet. Rollingwood requires a collar or harness attached to a leash plus an ID tag and a current vaccination tag. City of Austin areas cap it at 6 feet with fines up to $500. So the same walk can cross two or three different rules, and the Barton Creek Greenbelt at the southern edge is City of Austin parkland regardless of which city your house sits in.

Within Westlake the only designated off leash option is Rollingwood Park ball fields 3, 4 and 5, and only when no organized sporting event is using them. Everywhere else in 78746, off leash means your own property.
